This August, I┬ásaid goodbye to my well loved camera equipment. I have been a fan of the Olympus DSLR 4/3rds system and have valued the exceptional quality of their lenses, both kit and prime, in the last 12 years. 30822304408_fa5c33faea_mThe e-500 and the e-520 have been great workhorses and have accompanied me on my travels in my ‘digital SLR years’ after the c-5050 zoom, a fixed lens digital camera. (Still rates as one of the best ever lenses on a fixed lens camera).

The trade in was easy and has enabled me to transition to a Canon DSLR body with a Tamron lens. So far, the switch is a positive one but there is a little sadness in leaving behind a system to which I had become accustomed and having to learn new dials, settings and options. In time, the new set up will grow and I will learn the details – thankfully taking pictures is just the same….just need to get better at composition and light!!

It has taken a while but the new Flickr is now here with a redesigned front page, new business model and a new android app.

I have been on Flickr for a fair few years (April 2006) and enjoyed the communities (groups) and interactions in the early days but this waned as the site gained popularity. With the growth, the interactions became less meaningful as the perceived quality (and volume) of average/poor photographs increased. Alongside this, Yahoo seemed to forget about one of the most exciting aspects of their portfolio and development was non existent. As a result, I began a flirtation with Instagram and forgot about Flickr – keeping the pro account, just in case.

The instagram fiasco convinced me to return to Flickr (with my own average shots) and discard the new kid on the block. A new app helped continue the involvement but the changes yesterday have been a great source of joy – just maybe, Flickr is on its way back. The android app is superb, the new front page a beginning point of better things and hope that the communities may have new life. The pricing structure means that my account will be ‘grandfathered’ and so I can continue at sensible prices without advertising for the near future, without this I would probably stick to the free account and ride out the adverts.

Flickr is back in the game and its future brighter, albeit different, and once again there is hope that the premier photo sharing site will continue to lead the field.

(My site is here and my best shots on explore here)

Flickr has consistently been a favourite of mine for sharing photographs, well that was until earlier this year. I have reduced my time there and my sharing has been more limited with Instagram taking up more time. This week, the instagram love was knocked as its features with twitter had a few changes in the ecosystem and questions arose regarding its long term viability.
Today something changed, Flickr demonstrated that it was once again getting serious – an iOS app that rocks the mobile world. It is fabulous – sharing, noting, groups, pretty much everything. The yahoo gods have chosen to wake up and invest in the best photo sharing site available (yesteryear) and we have hope that once again, photos sharing will be fun.
The only downside is that there is no android version (an issue for me) but there are promises that one will appear. Meanwhile, I am back to drooling over this new app and looking forward to sharing the Flickr love once more.
